How to Fact-Check an AI Travel Itinerary Before Booking
Check an AI-generated itinerary in the order mistakes would cost you money or time. Begin with the date and fixed reservations, then test the transport and route. Restaurant descriptions can wait until you know the day is possible.
This is a review method for your draft, not a claim that an AI-generated detail has been independently confirmed.
Start with the calendar
Write the weekday beside each date. Confirm whether you have full days, partial days or overnight travel. A draft can look plausible while using the wrong weekday for a closure or treating the day your flight lands as an unrestricted sightseeing day.
Next, identify anything with a hard cutoff: a timed ticket, hotel reception hours, a final train or a reservation cancellation deadline. Read the provider's conditions for the actual product you intend to buy.
Use a source that owns the fact
| Claim in the draft | Where to check | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| An attraction opens at 09:00 | Official attraction website | Date-specific hours and last entry |
| A train takes 40 minutes | Transport operator's journey planner | Departure, arrival and changes |
| Dinner costs a set amount | Restaurant menu or direct reply | Whether the figure is current |
| A route is accessible | Venue or operator access information | Your specific access requirement |
A search snippet is a lead. Open the source and make sure it refers to your location, date and ticket type. If a fact remains unknown, keep it unknown rather than replacing it with another unsourced estimate.
Test one day from door to door
Imagine a draft with a 10:00 museum entry and a noon train. The museum visit alone may fit. The entire sequence also needs time to leave the building, collect bags, reach the correct station, find the platform and meet any boarding requirement.
For this hypothetical day, write those steps in order. If you cannot fit them without assuming perfect timing, move the train or remove the museum. Checking a travel time between map pins does not test the whole connection.
Use our neighborhood planning method to reduce unnecessary transfers.
Recalculate the budget
Confirm whether prices are per person, per room, per night or for the whole party. Add the selected baggage, local transfers and booking fees where applicable. Do not mix a return fare with a one-way fare or a total room cost with one person's share.
Keep estimates distinct from quotes. Our travel budget template gives a simple structure for that separation.
Record what you checked
Use four fields: detail, source link, date checked and action. “Book museum” is an action; “museum booked” requires a real confirmation. Recheck details that are likely to change shortly before departure.
What if two sources disagree?
Prefer a current, date-specific answer from the provider. If the discrepancy affects a booking or access need, contact that provider directly. Build a fallback while waiting rather than interpreting the more convenient answer as correct.
Should I ask AI to review its own answer?
It can help identify omissions, but that is another review of the text, not independent evidence. Use the audit prompt to make a checklist, then resolve the checklist with actual sources.
